The immediate-release formulation is used for the management of acute pain, such as pain from injuries or surgeries. The IR tablets typically start working within 30 minutes to 1 hour and provide pain relief for up to 4 to 6 hours.

The extended-release formulation of tapentadol is used for the management of moderate to severe chronic pain that requires around-the-clock treatment. The ER tablets provide pain relief for up to 12 hours and are taken twice a day.
